BEST ACTRESS Alexandra Daddario Percy Jackson and the Olympians: The Lightning Thief Alexandra brought the character of Annabeth Chase, the demigod daughter of Athena, to vibrant life in the first movie based on the 'Percy Jackson' series of novels. She is currently reprising the role, filming the upcoming new sequel, 'Percy Jackson & The Olympians: Sea of Monsters', due in theatres next year. Percy (Logan Lerman, The Three Musketeers') first met her while she was doing one of the things she does really well - sparring with a sword and taking names. They later duelled during a game based on 'capture the flag', though that match came across as more of an initiation for Percy - after she trounces him, he is more or less directed towards a river with healing properties in its waters that allow him to regain the upper hand. The look on her face while he visits the river suggests that she may have gone through the same initiation back when she was a Camp Half-Blood newbie. From then on, they fight on the same side, but that doesn't stop them from taking time out of their adventures to spar with each other playfully. Alexandra portrays the beautiful Annabeth as both gutsy, fearless warrior and playful, compassionate heroine - a demigoddess with a big heart who would make the ideal sparring partner for a fair, friendly fight. (Love her back parries.) BEST SWORDFIGHT The Three Musketeers Milla Jovovich vs. Musketeers They are five of the finest swordsmen in all of France. The personification of chivalry. The swashbuckling elite. In less than thirty seconds, four of them are completely decimated in an (almost) fair fight with one woman in a red and gold corset and petticoat dress. And she only pulls a pistol on the fifth one because he tried to attack her from behind (chivalry, ladies and gentlemen). Yes, with all those 'Matrix'-inspired moves, one might think they were making 'Resident Evil: Paris' instead ... but a very sexy duelling scene with the always gorgeous and fearless Milla on top form once again. BEST COSTUME *** Tie *** Milla Jovovich The Three Musketeers and Cate Blanchett Robin Hood I will admit, there is something definitively feminine about women wearing period dresses and petticoats to a swordfight. And it probably takes skill to move around in a petticoat while fencing with a rapier or sword. The two women who wore period dresses for fight scenes in their movies here did just that, and looked great. Cate's sea green dress is in keeping with the traditional lincoln green that most 'Robin Hood' costume departments seem to build their themes around, and her Lady Marion shines in her two fight scenes, the village swordfight against soldiers in particular. And Milla's red and gold corset and petticoat create a striking figure for the gutsy Milady de Winter as she glides across the ground, flips over one opponent, and flies through the air, effortlessly dodging Musketeer rapiers. Paul W. S. Anderson, her husband-director, likely felt that if it worked in their 'Resident Evil' movies, it could work in a period piece). Great performances and fashions from both women. I'm still undecided for Best Movie. The field over those two years was absolutely first rate. We welcome your comments and (if you didn't get to vote) your picks, too. nondisclosed_email@example.com (Brit Canuck)Sun, 09 Dec 2012 14:06:50 +0000 Swashies Results - Theatrical Movies 2010 & 2011https://bswordswomen.runboard.com/p171315,from=rss#post171315https://bswordswomen.runboard.com/p171315,from=rss#post171315The Swashie Awards 2010 & 2011 Theatrical Movies RESULTS Earlier this year, we asked for your votes in four categories for movies released theatrically during the calendar years of 2010 and 2011. Why those two years? Quite a few swashbuckling movies with female characters were released during that period. We didn't get a huge response to that vote, so we left the voting open for a while. Now that we're just about at our 7th Anniversary, and about to open our very own Hall of Fame, now seems the appropriate time to declare the winners in each category. The envelopes, please ... Jack Overhype. And Milla Jovovich seems to be the 'it' girl around here, based on one win for her sexy one-on-five duel, and two runner-up finishes for Actress and Costume. Natalie Portman's win for Best Actress proved that even an arguably very bad period comedy can get a boost from an Oscar winner with prior swordplay experience (check out her Lux Super Rich shampoo TV commercials from Japan on YouTube). And the five feisty women of 'Sucker Punch' proved that people love to watch girls swordfight (and gunfight, and hand-to-hand fight, etc. etc.), earning a hard-fought tie with Milla and her own five fellow sparring partners. Congratulations to all the winners, runners-up and nominees. You've done our favorite genre justice, and helped bring female swashbucklers to the forefront where they belong. Watch for a new Swashies vote starting in the New Year, this one featuring Classic Theatrical Movies and movies released prior to 2010. We're also planning Swashies votes for both Television and Online Swordplay, the latter for videos released online featuring fencing women. Snow White made headlines several times this past year for her swashbuckling, so we will also want you to vote for your favorite Snow White actress of 2012 - The Year of Snow White. And our brand new Hall of Fame will open later this month, with a living legend as our first Lifetime Achievement honoree, plus a Special Achievement nod to the French artistic fencing group that over the past 15 years has helped put both Musketeers and swordfighting women firmly on the pop culture map. 2013 looks set to be an exciting new year for 'Swordswomen of the Silver Screen', and it all starts this Wednesday, December 12th, when we mark our 7th Anniversary. Thanks to all our members and visitors for your ongoing support. nondisclosed_email@example.com (Brit Canuck)Sat, 08 Dec 2012 19:06:53 +0000
